Introduction to the MDGs

More than one seventh of the world's population is often said to live on one dollar per day. While this seems impossible to the fortunate (us) it is very much possible and it is the reality. This world of poverty also leads to crime; another of the world's major problems. So if we were to fight poverty, most of the crime would automatically disappear. But no one is doing anything to end poverty. This includes everyone from the commoners to the highest of leaders and celebs.

At the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, many countries pledged to end poverty by 2015. They signed the Millennium Declaration thus committing all countries, irrespective of developmental status, to the eight Millennium Development Goals to be implemented in both developed and developing countries. At the time, technology was developing fast, as it still is, and this convinced many that in 15 years time, they would see the back of the world's problems. Yet it is the end of 2014 and people are still surviving on less than one dollar a day and so many are illiterate. The statistics in both cases are irrelevant as one person in each is one person too much. Still, statistics in certain countries show improvement while other countries show further deterioration of social and economic standards.

The Millennium Campaign aimed to form a worldwide movement of ordinary people who would join their voices tto support making the world a better place. This however seems to have taken no effect. One main cause is that the Campaign focused on getting people to hold others accountable instead of getting people to take matters into their own hands.

But whether you are to encourage others to make a difference or you want to do it yourself, you must be asking yourself Why Me? It should be you because the responsibility lies not in the politicians but in the public that exerted the right to vote them in. But there is an infinite amount of good that you can do as well as any famous personality. It is up to every young person, activist, community leader, religious leader, political leader and any other amount of people to unite to ensure that these goals become a reality. Stand out and make a difference even after the goal deadline because the world needs you to be that brick that completes the house.
